The concept of pairing fine dining with great craft beer is one which hasn’t really gained much ground amongst the hospitality trade here in Cumbria.
Sure there are a few exceptions – The Ryebeck near Windermere, the Mason’s Arms at Strawberry Bank, even Simon Rogan’s Pig & Whistle is on board – but, as a whole, the hotels and restaurants of the Lake District are behind the game.
As part of the Brewed in Cumbria initiative, Plain Creative devised a beer pairing lunch at The Drunken Duck at Barngates, an establishment which is annually recipient of many glowing awards and accolades and, as you’d expect with the brilliant Barngates Brewery right next door, fully up to speed with the delights of good food and good beer.
Working with beer writer/consultant Jeff Pickthall, Head Chef Johnny Watson and proprietor Stef Barton, we created a seven course tasting menu comprising lovely local produce and beautiful beers from four of Cumbria’s best breweries.
The next step was to get along around fifty of the region’s leading hoteliers and restaurateurs.
Places filled fast, a great event ensued and from what we have seen since, perceptions about beer and food have started to change.
It’s not the sort of thing you’d expect your average creative agency to get involved with, but we never set out to be your average creative agency…
